La Leche League (LLL) is an organization founded in 1956 by seven women who wanted to make breastfeeding easier and more rewarding for both mother and child. The organization offers information and encouragement (primarily through personal help) to those women who want to breastfeed their babies. Our mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support and information, and to promote an understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.
Our name, La Leche, is Spanish and is pronounced “la lay-chay”. Simply translated, it means “the milk”. The name of our organization was inspired by a shrine in St. Augustine, Florida, dedicated to the Mother of Christ under the title “Nuestra Senora de la Leche y Buen Parto,” which translates freely, “Our Lady of Happy Delivery and Plentiful Milk”.
Our local La Leche League of Lenawee group has been active in Lenawee County, Michigan since 2007. Our leader is a volunteer and has breastfed her children. She has also been trained and accredited through La Leche League International to help mothers by telephone. Our local group also has a monthly meeting where expecting mothers and mothers with breastfeeding babies may come to learn, share, receive help and build relationships with other mothers who breastfeed.
This website was created by La Leche League Leader Jennifer Bennett who is our current webmaster. The La Leche League logo is a registered trademark of La Leche League, International. The LLL logo is used by this site with the permission of LLLI.
